Russian Representative in Vienna called the withdrawal of US troops a win for Germany

30 July 2020

Germany can benefit politically from the US decision to withdraw some of its military personnel from this country, said Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna.

"Some observers interpret the withdrawal of 12,000 American troops from Germany as a "punishment" for Berlin. Why? Germany is not under threat. Thus, the security sphere will not be affected. Politically, Germany will probably benefit from this," Ulyanov wrote on Twitter.

The diplomat added that the withdrawal of part of the military contingent can only affect the economic situation in the areas around US bases.

Earlier, the head of the Pentagon, Mark Esper, announced the withdrawal of almost 12 thousand American troops from Germany, most of which (6,4 thousand) will go home, and the rest will be relocated to NATO countries in Europe, including Italy and Belgium.

President of the United States Donald Trump has previously promised to reduce the number of US military personnel in Germany. He justified this decision by saying that Berlin had overdue payments to the alliance. On Wednesday evening, on Twitter, the head of the White House also expressed confusion about why the US should protect Germany from Russia when Berlin buys energy from Moscow.
