Russian Security Council Secretary Meets with Sultan of Oman in Muscat

26 September 2023

Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev was received by Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said during his visit to Muscat. They discussed both bilateral and international agendas.

"In Muscat, Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said received Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev. They discussed several regional and international issues, along with the potential for expanding cooperation between Moscow and Muscat," reported the press service of the Russian Security Council office.

Previously, Patrushev conducted Russian-Omani security consultations in Muscat, and he also had separate meetings with Idris al Kindi, the Secretary General of the National Security Council, and Sultan al-Nuamani, the head of the Sultan's Chancellery. Additionally, the security council secretary engaged in discussions with Omani Crown Prince Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said.

In March 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a telephone conversation with the Sultan of Oman. This conversation marked the first high-level contact between the two nations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1985. The initiative for the conversation came from the Omani side. According to a statement from the Kremlin's press service, during this conversation, the leaders conducted a comprehensive review of the current state and future prospects of Russian-Omani cooperation, as well as exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East region. In July, Russian and Omani foreign ministers held discussions in Moscow, during which Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, among other topics, noted that the Sultan of Oman had been invited to visit Russia.
