Russian Security Council told about the US readiness to "strangle" Europe

10 August 2020

The United States against the background of the pandemic is ready to strangle European countries for the sake of its interests, Alexander Venediktov, Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council told RIA Novosti.

According to him, Europe follows American instructions.

"Washington said-that's it, the  Europeans have to follow. If you want to continue to maintain allied relations within the framework of NATO, pay the price, " the source said.

According to him, the US "destroys such agreements as the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the Open Skies Treaty, on which European security directly depends, in order to show the EU countries who is the boss here."
Venediktov also recalled that the US authorities were taking all measures to ensure that Europe did not receive cheap gas through the Nord Stream 2.

Earlier, three US senators sent a letter demanding that the leadership of the German city of Sassnitz stop helping to build the gas pipeline. Otherwise, lawmakers promised "financial destruction" of the port of Mukran, which is the logistics center of the project.

However, German politicians and the Ministry of Energy reacted harshly to such a demand, noting that Germany can take retaliatory measures.

The US is hindering the construction of Nord Stream 2 to promote its own liquefied natural gas. To do this, at the end of the year, the US authorities adopted a defense budget that provides for sanctions against companies involved in laying pipes.

After that, the Allseas Swiss firm immediately announced the termination of work. However, Energy Minister Alexander Novak said that Russia was able to independently lay the remaining 160 kilometers of the gas pipeline through the efforts of the vessels "Akademik Chersky" and "Fortuna".
