Russian UN Envoy Expresses Hope for Ceasefire in Gaza

21 February

Russia is hoping that Israel will soon agree to an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and that a mechanism for international coordination of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations will be established, Dmitriy Polyanskiy, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said in an RTVI interview.

"The situation is deteriorating for Israel. Therefore, I hope that the Israeli leadership will soon opt for an immediate ceasefire. This will pave the way for comprehensive diplomacy, including UN-led efforts," Polyanskiy emphasized.

The diplomat highlighted the necessity of establishing a mechanism for international coordination of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and implementing UN Security Council resolutions on the creation of two states. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the form of this mechanism, stating, "At this stage, Israel's agreement to an immediate ceasefire is crucial. Subsequently, the parameters of international assistance for this settlement will become clearer."
