A Russian citizen detained in Tunisia has been placed in the women’s prison in Manouba, a suburb west of Tunis, the capital. The administration of the penitentiary confirmed the development to TASS but refrained from providing further details.
“She is here,” stated a prison official, adding that visitation is permitted only for relatives.
Another detention facility, Mornaguia Prison, located 14 kilometers from Tunis, confirmed that a group of detained Russians is being held there but declined to comment further.
The women's prison in Manouba, established in the 1960s, replaced previous practices where women in Tunisia served their sentences alongside men.
The Russian Embassy in Tunisia earlier stated that it remains in constant contact with local investigative authorities regarding the detained Russian citizens. According to the embassy, the rights of the 11 detained Russians are not being violated, and their health is reported as satisfactory, with no complaints regarding their treatment or detention conditions. Investigative actions are ongoing, and the first court hearing, expected to be held in a closed session, will be scheduled soon.
The group of 11 Russians was detained in mid-November while conducting research in the Haidra area of the Kasserine province near the Algerian border. This region is under heightened security due to sensitive infrastructure controlled by Tunisia’s Ministry of Defense. The area also remains tense due to the presence of terrorist cells near the border.
