The positions of Russia and Jordan on issues of Middle East settlement (MES) coincide, joint efforts can find a solution to the Palestinian problem, which could satisfy all involved parties, Russian Ambassador in Amman Gleb Desyatnikov said.
"Indeed, the approaches of our friendly countries to the ME are traditionally close and, I would even say, coincide. This is largely due to the similarity of the methods that the two states use to promote a lasting and just peace in the Middle East, without which it is impossible to solve other regional problems," Desyatnikov said.
According to the Ambassador, Russia and Jordan are constantly "on the most pressing basis" raising this issue in contact with all representatives of the international community. Work is also continuing on activating the "Quartet" of international mediators, "open to consideration of any relevant proposals on this issue," said the diplomat.
"We are trying equally closely to pay attention to and promote the restoration of intra-Palestinian unity, for which we organized a meeting of leaders of all Palestinian political groups in Moscow late last year. The next similar event was hindered by border closures due to the coronavirus epidemic. However, once the quarantine restrictions are finally lifted, we intend to further intensify steps on all fronts that could lead to an early resolution of the Middle East conflict," Desyatnikov added.
The head of the Russian diplomatic mission in Amman noted that coordination between Russia, Jordan and Palestine continues at the highest levels.
The Ambassador recalled that on July 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas. The parties discussed in detail and with great interest both the current state of affairs in the Middle East settlement and possible next steps to bring it out of stagnation in order to achieve as soon as possible the much-needed concrete progress.
"Similar contacts have been made with the Jordanian leadership. In general, the MES has traditionally been and is at the center of the list of topics for talks and consultations between Moscow and Amman. We are convinced that through joint efforts, of course, with the assistance of other leading representatives of the world community, we will be able to find effective and long-term solutions to this conflict, which would suit all parties involved in it," said Desyatnikov.
The Palestinians, as part of the peace process with Israel, which is currently on hold, are demanding that future borders between the two sovereign states follow the lines that existed before the Six-Day War of 1967, with possible territorial swaps. They hope to establish their state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem wants to be its capital. Israel refuses to return to the 1967 borders, let alone to share with the Arabs Jerusalem, which has already declared its eternal and indivisible capital.
