The list of new partner countries for BRICS will be unveiled within the next two weeks, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and BRICS Sherpa Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with the TASS Analytical Center, summarizing Russia’s tenure as chair of the organization.
“There are two weeks left in Russia's term as BRICS chair. During this time, we must finalize agreements with the partners and publish the list of those with whom we have reached consensus,” Ryabkov said.
He noted that following the announcement, the chairmanship would officially pass to Brazil, although the formal handover ceremony occurred in Yekaterinburg. “Brazil will immediately take the reins and begin work right after the Christmas holidays,” he added.
On October 23, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov stated that a list of 13 potential BRICS partner countries had been agreed upon. Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin confirmed on November 15 that Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand had joined as partners. Additionally, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told Izvestia that Vietnam had expressed interest in becoming a BRICS partner.
As of January 1, 2024, BRICS (comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) expanded its membership to include Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia. Saudi Arabia participates as an invited country. Russia served as the first chair of the expanded BRICS, with Brazil set to assume the role next year.
