Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi discussed the Agency's participation in the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program at a meeting in Vienna. The Russian side expressed a positive assessment of the IAEA's activities in the framework of the JCPOA, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

"Topical issues of interaction between Russia and the Agency were discussed. Particular attention was paid to the participation of the IAEA in the implementation of the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear program, as well as to the settlement of difficulties arising in connection with the application of the comprehensive safeguards Agreement and its Additional Protocol in Iran. Ryabkov gave a positive assessment of the professionalism with which the Agency approaches the tasks of applying safeguards in Iran, as well as verification in the context of the JCPOA," the document says.

Ryabkov stressed the key role of the IAEA in confirming the exclusively peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program. "It was noted that the verification mechanism of the IAEA under any circumstances should remain objective, depoliticized, technically sound and continue to fully comply with the safeguards agreements concluded between the Agency and states," the message reads.

At the meeting, Ryabkov also confirmed Grossi's invitation to visit the Russian Federation after the lifting of epidemic restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
