Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov at a meeting on Monday with Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali discussed the negotiations in Vienna on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program stressed Moscow's determination to continue focused work to restore it.
"The parties reviewed the situation in the negotiations in the Vienna format to restore full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action to resolve the Iranian nuclear program. The serious mood to continue focused work on 'restarting' the JCPOA was emphasized," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement released Monday.
The JCPOA was signed by the permanent five of the UN Security Council and Germany with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear program. In 2018, incumbent US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw from the JCPOA. Current US leader Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled Washington's willingness to return to the nuclear deal with Tehran. The five-plus-one group (Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the United States and France) has been negotiating with Iran to restore the JCPOA to its original form since April in Vienna.
The seventh round of these talks began on November 29. The previous such meetings in the Austrian capital took place in June of this year. Then the negotiation process was suspended, including in connection with the presidential elections in Iran.
