Saudi Arabia has urged for reforms within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after the United States vetoed Algeria's resolution regarding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement published on its X page (formerly Twitter).
"The Foreign Ministry expressed regret over the veto of the draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in and around the Gaza Strip. Now more than ever, the Security Council needs to undergo reform to enable it to effectively fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security based on trust and avoiding double standards," the statement highlighted.
Algeria's submission calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone. It rejects the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians and emphasizes the commitment to a two-state solution to the Palestinian question.
Thirteen of the 15 members of the Security Council, including Russia and China, voted in favor of the draft resolution, while the UK abstained. Only the United States opposed it, preventing the adoption of the document.
