Saudi Arabia has strongly condemned the actions of Syrian militias fighting against the security forces of the transitional government, according to a statement from the Saudi Foreign Ministry.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia condemns the crimes committed by illegal armed groups in the Syrian Arab Republic, which have attacked security forces. The Kingdom reaffirms its support for the Syrian government in its efforts to maintain security, stability, and civil peace," the statement said.
On Thursday, clashes erupted across Latakia province between Syrian security forces and armed groups loyal to former president Bashar al-Assad. The fiercest fighting took place in the city of Jableh, home to Alawite communities — the religious minority to which Assad and his family belong.
Syrian security forces announced that the armed groups involved in the clashes are linked to Suheil al-Hassan, a former special forces commander. According to Al Jazeera, at least 15 Syrian security personnel were killed during the fighting.
A curfew has been imposed in Latakia, Tartus, and Homs amid the ongoing violence, which is reportedly the most intense the country has seen since the change of power in December 2024.
