The situation in Afghanistan has exacerbated a number of problems, including illegal arms trade, which may take an unprecedented scale, Aleksandr Venediktov, deputy secretary of the Russian Security council, said.

"We have to say that the situation in this country poses a number of serious threats not only to regional security, but first of all, to the national security of our country," he said Tuesday at a meeting of the presidium of the Russian Academy of sciences to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.

Among such threats, Venediktov named terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, mass migration and "export of radicalism". "[They also include] the illegal arms trade, which in the context of recent events may take an absolutely unprecedented scale," Venediktov stressed.

The deputy secretary of the Russian Security council drew attention to the fact that "the United States has never provided any of its NATO allies or other organizations with such large-scale military and technical assistance as it did in Afghanistan."

He noted that against the backdrop of all these threats, the Afghan problem remains the focus of attention of both the Security council as a whole and its scientific council.
