The deputy foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states held consultations in Moscow on Wednesday at which they stressed the need to form an inclusive government in Afghanistan as soon as possible, the Russian diplomatic office said in a statement.
"Special attention was paid to the situation in Afghanistan. The agreed position of the SCO in favor of the earliest formation of an inclusive government involving representatives of all ethno-political and religious groups of Afghan society, restoration of peace in this country and its economic revival as an important factor in ensuring stability in the region," Smolensk Square informed.
The foreign ministry said the meeting, chaired by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov, thoroughly discussed "further strengthening of the SCO and the development of multifaceted cooperation" in the context of current processes in global politics and the economy. "The converging intention to deepen coordination in international affairs, primarily in the UN and other interstate associations, was confirmed in the interests of increasing the SCO's contribution to the formation of a multipolar architecture based on mutual respect, equal cooperation and equal and indivisible security," the statement said.
The parties also expressed readiness "to step up efforts to improve mechanisms for the joint fight against international terrorism and extremism, drug trafficking and transnational organized crime" to ensure security in the SCO region.
