SCO Secretary-General Expects New Counter-Terrorism Agreements at Summit

04 July

Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Secretary-General Zhang Ming highlighted the "fundamentally new" nature of documents to be reviewed at the summit in Astana, announcing that new agreements on combating terrorism will be signed at the forum.

"At the meeting of the Council of Heads of State, new agreements are expected on cooperation in counter-terrorism, combating the 'three forces of evil,' anti-drug activities, suppression of cross-border organized crime, and ensuring information security," Zhang Ming stated, according to the Kazinform agency. He emphasized that "along with the adoption of the Astana Declaration, we expect that the heads of the SCO member states will consider a solid package of fundamentally new documents."

Among these documents are initiatives such as "On World Unity for Just Peace and Harmony" and the Uzbek draft "Statement of the Council of Heads of the SCO Member States on the Principles of Good-Neighborliness, Trust, and Cross-Border Partnership of the SCO."

Zhang Ming also mentioned that during the Astana summit, decisions will be made regarding the appointments of the Secretary General of the organization and the Director of the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure, as the terms of the current officeholders expire.

Additionally, a decision will be made to grant the city of Qingdao the status of "Cultural and Tourist Capital of the SCO," a title currently held by Almaty.
