Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said it is important to create institutions together with Russia to combat Western sanctions. He said this during talks with Russian Security Council (SB) Secretary Nikolai Patrushev in Tehran on Wednesday, IRNA news agency reported.

According to Shamkhani, "it is important to create joint and integrated institutions to combat sanctions," as well as "activate the capabilities of international organizations to counter countries that impose sanctions." Overall, the Iranian official noted the importance of bilateral cooperation in the face of the harsh restrictions imposed on his country.

"Expanding bilateral and regional cooperation, especially with neighboring countries, in the economic sphere is one of our country's strategic priorities," he said. Shamkhani added that in order to make better use of the existing trade and economic potential, it is necessary to strengthen interaction in the platforms of regional organizations, particularly the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The Iranian side also considers it important to develop relations with Russia in energy, transport, agriculture, trade, banking and environmental protection.

Patrushev arrived in Iran at the invitation of Shamkhani. He will hold planned Russian-Iranian consultations, which will be attended by representatives of a number of ministries and departments of the two countries, the press service of the Russian Security Council's office said on Wednesday.
