Senegal's new President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who assumed office on April 2, has articulated the nation's unwavering commitment to fostering African integration in his address to the nation on April 4, commemorating Independence Day.
"As custodians of the pan-Africanist principles espoused by Cheikh Anta Diop (Senegalese public figure - TASS) and Léopold Sédar Senghor (Senegal's first president, led the country in 1960-1980 - TASS), one of the founding fathers of the Organization of African Unity, we stand resolutely dedicated to advancing African integration and realizing the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area," stated the head of state, as reported by Agence de presse sénégalaise.
Faye reassured, "We will consistently uphold and bolster bonds of amicable neighborliness and proactive solidarity within our regional institutions, particularly the Economic Community of West African States and the West African Economic and Monetary Union."
"The prudent exploitation of our natural resources, constitutionally designated as the collective property of the people, will be a focal point for my administration," he emphasized, further noting that Senegal will undergo audits in the mining, gas, and oil sectors.
Moreover, Faye pledged to combat corruption, misappropriation of public funds, and money laundering, while ensuring the prosecution of tax evasion. "Within the framework of existing laws and regulations, the rights of investors will always be safeguarded, alongside the interests of the state and its citizens," he affirmed.
Faye secured victory in Senegal's presidential election on March 24, garnering over 54% of the vote in the initial round.
