Sergey Lavrov: It won’t be able to draw Russia into a new arms race

15 April 2019

The United States will not succeed in the drawing Russia into a new arms race. The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed this, speaking at the XXVII Assembly of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy.

According to him, the US administration “has headed for the elimination of agreements of arms control sphere”.

"Following the collapse of the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty, the Treaty on the Elimination of Medium and Lesser Missile (DRDM) is now in line. After that, it can not be excluded that there will be problems with the renewal of the term of the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Arms (START). In general, all it can lead to the disastrous consequences, and not only for those areas of the international life that were regulated by these treaties, but also for the remaining mechanisms in the sphere of nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation", the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation quoted Sergey Lavrov

According to the head of the Russian Diplomatic Department, it’s obvious that in Washington “supporters of the launch of a new arms race have prevailed”.

However, as Lavrov emphasized, Russia does not intend to take part in the arms race.

“The President of Russia Vladimir Putin has repeatedly reacted to such processes. I want to underline once again: it is not possible to draw Russia into these costly actions, Lavrov noted, in particular.
