Sergey Lavrov: US actions in Syria contradict international law

30 October 2019

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the USA's military presence in Syria to protect oil fields is contrary to international law. The Russian diplomat voiced the corresponding opinion yesterday at a trilateral meeting with colleagues from Turkey and Iran Mevlut Cavusoglu and Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva.

"The actions of the United States in the Syrian Arab Republic are contrary to international law. The presence of the United States and members of the coalition in Syria is illegal and contradicts the position of the legitimate government of Syria," said the Russian Foreign Minister.

The Minister also added that the presence of American troops in Syria under the pretext of protecting the country from ISIS terrorists (the organization is outlawed in Russia) is illegal, unlike Turkey and Russia, whose presence was approved by the Syrian government. At the same time, the world experts, including in the US itself, have launched an active discussion on the relevant issue.
