A group of politicians suspected of preparing mass unrest including former officials, human rights activists and prominent public figures of Kyrgyzstan have been arrested by court order, the press service of the republic's Supreme Court told TASS on Tuesday.
"The court of the Pervomaisky district of Bishkek selected a preventive measure against Azimbek Beknazarov, accused of committing crimes, in the form of detention for the duration of the investigation, that is, until December 23, 2022, with detention in the institution №21 SIN (Penitentiary Service) under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan," said a representative of the press service. Beknazarov previously worked as the country's attorney general and ambassador to Malaysia.
The press-service assured that former deputy Ravshan Dzheenbekov is under arrest until December 20 of this year, former member of the Central Election Commission Gulnara Dzhurabayeva - for two months, former head of the Ministry of Interior Keneshbek Duishebayev - for two months, famous human rights activist Asiya Sasykbayeva - until December 20, and former judge of the Constitutional Court Klara Sooronkulova - until December 20, 2022.
On October 23, the MIA detained more than 20 well known politicians, human rights activists, public figures and former officials on suspicion of organizing mass unrest. Their homes were searched. All detainees actively opposed the transfer of the Kempir-Abad reservoir to Uzbekistan as part of the demarcation and delimitation of the common border section. On October 24, a march in support of the detainees took place in Bishkek, which was attended by an estimated 100-150 people.
According to the press service of the republic's interior ministry, all the suspects were detained as part of the investigation into the case under the article "Preparation for Organizing Mass Riots" of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan. "During special investigative actions, as part of the criminal case under investigation, evidence was obtained that individuals were involved in organizing and preparing for mass riots, followed by an illegal seizure of power," the ministry's press service explained.
