Resolving the situation in Afghanistan requires urgent decisions and international cooperation, Russian Defense Minister General Sergei Shoigu said.

"Within the framework of the United Nations to ensure the organization's security under new conditions," he said at the Moscow Conference on International Security.

Shoigu noted the need to use the capabilities of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, in which all states bordering Afghanistan, including Pakistan and Iran, are represented.

"It is 'impossible' to untie the Afghan knot without cooperation with Islamabad and Tehran," Shoigu said.

NATO has not achieved results in Afghanistan in twenty years, after the departure of the alliance there is a great probability of a civil war, he said.

"The development of the situation in Afghanistan requires the close attention of both neighboring countries and international organizations. It is necessary to recognize that for 20 years of a large military grouping of the Western alliance in the country, it has failed to achieve significant results in stabilization and the formation of stable governance structures," Shoigu said.

"After the withdrawal of NATO forces, we can expect with high probability a renewal of the civil war with all the negative consequences: further deterioration of the life of the population, mass migration, the spread of extremism to neighboring states," the minister added.
