The sixth round of talks in Vienna on restoring the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran's nuclear program will take place this weekend, Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, who leads the Russian delegation to the consultations in Vienna, said on Friday. He had earlier announced that these consultations would be held at the end of this week.
"The next meeting of the Joint commission on the JCPOA will take place this weekend. It will mark the start of the sixth round of the Vienna talks on restoring the 'Iranian' nuclear deal. Will this round be the last? No one knows, but all negotiators hope so," Ulyanov wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, Ulyanov told reporters that there was almost complete clarity in the talks about US sanctions against Iran to be lifted, as well as an almost agreed upon list of nuclear steps Iran must take to return to its nuclear commitments in the JCPOA. Overall, a picture has emerged of how all these measures will be put into practice, he noted.
In Vienna, face-to-face talks between Iran and the international "five" (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France) to restore the Iranian nuclear agreement to its original form have been underway since April. Experts in three working groups are working on the text of an agreement to resume the JCPOA: the lifting of US sanctions against Iran (and further US return to the deal) and the implementation of Iran's nuclear obligations, from which it significantly deviates. Representatives of the JCPOA states are also holding separate consultations with the US delegation, which withdrew from the agreement in 2018 but now wants to return to it. There have been no direct talks between US emissaries and Iranian representatives in Vienna so far.
