Slutsky held talks with Zarif

The head of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, Leonid Slutsky, held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran, the press service of the Iranian Foreign Ministry reported on Sunday.

 


"Slutsky noted that the visit in the conditions of the coronavirus was due to the level of relations between the two countries and the need to [discuss] important issues," the report says.

 


In turn, "the Iranian Foreign Minister pointed to the level of cooperation between the two countries in various fields." "Zarif mentioned the agreement on long-term strategic cooperation between Iran and Russia," the press service notes. Tehran and Moscow agreed to update the 2001 agreement on the basis of relations and principles of cooperation between the countries during Zarif's visit to Russia.

 


It is also noted that during the talks, the parties discussed the situation in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Libya.

 


On Saturday, the head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs held talks with the Chairman of the Iran Parliament (Mejlis)  Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. Slutsky gave the Chairman of the Mejlis samples of Russian medical equipment, including complexes for diagnosing the coronavirus. In addition, he invited Ghalibaf to visit Russia and pointed out the possibility of holding joint meetings of specialized commissions.

 


Slutsky became the first State Duma representative to visit Iran after the start of the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, he became the first Deputy to meet the new Chairman of the Iranian Majlis.
