Slutsky says Russia is working hard to bring Syria back to the Arab League

16 March 2021

The Russian side is making significant political and diplomatic efforts to return Syria to the Arab League (LAS), Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters on Monday on the tenth anniversary of the Syrian conflict.

"We still continue to assist the Syrian settlement on all fronts, including making significant political and diplomatic efforts to return Damascus to the Arab League. Syria, I am convinced, must once again become a full member of the international community and return to the Arab family," Slutsky said.

The Head of the Committee expressed the hope that the contacts of the State Duma deputies with the parliaments of the Arab League countries will become a powerful mechanism or even a kind of "return spring" to restore the status of Syria in the Arab League.

Syria's membership in the Arab League was suspended in November 2011 against the background of the intensification of the armed conflict in this country.
