Slutsky: the West wants to deflect attention from the failure in Afghanistan by talking about Russia

Any statements about Russia's alleged intention to take control of the situation in Afghanistan are an attempt to deflect attention from the failure of Western policy in this direction, Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed this opinion on Thursday in his Telegram channel, commenting on statements made by Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

At an unscheduled meeting of the European Parliament's foreign affairs and development committees, Borrell said that "the EU must not allow Russia and China to take control of the situation in Afghanistan and become sponsors of Kabul."

"What the EU definitely should not do is continue to pander to the adventurism and selfishness of the United States, which have caused today's difficult situation in Afghanistan," Slutsky was convinced. He noted that over the past two decades the collective West has neither managed to weaken the Taliban (a terrorist organization banned in Russia), nor strengthen the Afghan armed forces, nor achieve a sustainable political settlement, while "Washington has been conducting another geopolitical experiment all this time, playing very dangerous games with terrorists."

"Any statements about the need to counter Russia and China, which allegedly already share Afghanistan, are nothing more than an attempt to deflect attention from the brutal failure of Western policy in the Afghan direction," the committee head stressed, noting that "Russia was certainly present and will be present in this region due to political and geographical factors."

Slutsky also believes that the international community should be concerned about "general security, stabilization of Afghanistan and prevention of a new humanitarian catastrophe".
