Sputnik Light vaccine registered in Kazakhstan

15 July 2021

The single-component vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik Light has been registered in Kazakhstan, the Russian Direct Investment Fund reported.

"RDIF announces the registration of the Russian single-component vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik Light by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Sputnik Light single-component vaccine will shorten the period of vaccination of the population and accelerate the creation of collective immunity," the fund's announcement follows.

In February 2021, Kazakhstan registered the two-component Sputnik V vaccine and organized its production by the Karaganda Pharmaceutical Complex with the support of technological transfer from RDIF and the Gamaleya Research Center.

The Sputnik Light vaccine is the first component of the Sputnik V vaccine. The efficacy of the single-component Sputnik Light vaccine is 79.4% from day 28 after receiving immunization.

Efficacy was calculated using data from Russians who received only one shot as part of the mass civilian vaccination program and who did not receive a second shot for any reason between December 5, 2020, and April 15, 2021. The effectiveness rate of about 80% exceeds that of many vaccines requiring two shots.
