Sputnik Lite approved in Egypt

24 September 2021

The Russian single-component vaccine against coronavirus Sputnik Lite has been approved for use by the Egyptian Drug Authority. This was reported by the Russian direct investment fund (RDIF).

Sputnik Lite is the first component of the Sputnik V vaccine. Vaccination with Sputnik Lite in Egypt will allow the faster formation of population immunity in the most populous country of the Middle East, where more than 100 million people live, the fund believes.

The two-component vaccine, Sputnik V, was also approved in Egypt in February 2021. Sputnik Lite and Sputnik V are registered in the country under the emergency use authorization (EUA) procedure.

Sputnik Lite demonstrates high safety and efficacy during vaccination of the population in a number of countries.  In particular, data from the Ministry of health of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, showed a 78.6-83.7% efficacy of the Sputnik Lite vaccine in vaccinating the elderly. In Paraguay, according to the country's Ministry of health, the effectiveness of the drug was 93.5% during mass vaccination," added the fund.

Currently, the vaccine is not only used independently but is being studied in combination with drugs from other manufacturers. Similar studies are currently underway in Argentina, the UAE, Azerbaijan, and other countries.
