State Department reminded Ankara of the sanctions for the purchase of Russian S-400

21 April 2020

The US again reminded Turkey of the possibility of imposing sanctions for the purchase of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems, Reuters reports.

"We continue to emphasize at the highest levels that the S-400 deal is the subject of ongoing discussions on the imposition of sanctions, it also remains a major obstacle in bilateral relations and within NATO. We are confident that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his high-ranking officials understand our position," said, in particular, the head of the press service of the State Department Morgan Ortagus, adding that Washington is "deeply concerned" about Ankara's efforts to activate the S-400.

Russia and Turkey signed a contract for the supply of S-400 complexes to Ankara in 2017.

Turkey was the first NATO country to buy these systems from Russia. Ankara's decision provoked a sharply negative reaction from the US and the Alliance. The US continues to try to make Turkey abandon the Russian air defense system.
