Sudan Army surprised by mediators decision to suspend talks in Jeddah

The Sudanese army expressed surprise at the decision of Saudi Arabia and the United States, who mediate the talks with the rapid support force (special forces) in Jeddah, to suspend consultations between the parties to the conflict. A Sudanese Armed Forces spokesman said Friday.

"The previous day, the army presented its proposals for implementing the terms of the truce, which was agreed upon by the mediators at the consultations in Jeddah," said the military spokesman, quoted by Al-Hadath as saying. "And we were surprised when Saudi Arabia and the US announced they had suspended the consultations without even responding to our proposals," he noted.

A spokesman for the armed forces called on the mediators "to continue their efforts to convince the special forces to fulfill the truce requirements and return to negotiations."

On Wednesday, the Sudanese army said it was suspending its participation in the Jeddah talks because the rapid support forces, the army believes, are refusing to withdraw their troops from hospitals and residential areas. Saudi Arabia and the US later issued a joint statement notifying the suspension of consultations until "the parties make clear by their actions that they are serious about respecting the truce."
