Syria and Lebanon Reject Forced Displacement Attempts of Gazans

23 October 2023

Syria and Lebanon have strongly opposed any efforts to forcibly displace the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip and have called for the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. This stance was articulated in a joint statement issued by the Foreign Ministers of Syria and Lebanon, Faisal Mekdad and Abdallah Bou Habib, following their meeting in Damascus. The contents of the statement were reported by the Syrian state news agency SANA.

"The parties urge the immediate and unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and vehemently reject any endeavor to forcibly displace the Palestinian population," the statement reads.

The ministers accused the Israeli Armed Forces of committing war crimes against the Palestinians and called for an end to hostilities, the termination of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and the Golan Heights, as well as the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric reported on October 13 that Israeli authorities had informed the United Nations that 1.1 million Palestinians should evacuate to the southern part of the Gaza Strip. This evacuation order also included "all UN staff, as well as those seeking refuge in UN facilities, such as schools, medical centers, and clinics." The call for Gaza residents to move south was subsequently shared on the official Telegram channel of the Israel Defense Forces Press Service.
