Syria called on the European Union to lift unilateral sanctions

08 April 2020

The European Union should immediately lift unilateral sanctions against Syria, which initially violate basic human rights. This is stated in the statement of the Syrian Foreign Ministry.

"Syria, whose people have suffered from these sanctions, joins the countries and organizations that prove the importance of lifting illegal sanctions and any sanctions, including on bank transfers, which were imposed by the US and the EU for political reasons in blatant violation of international law and deprivation of basic human rights," the statement said, in particular.

Earlier, a letter asking for the complete and immediate lifting of unilateral sanctions that prevent countries from fighting the coronavirus was sent to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres by the representatives of Russia, China, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

According to the latest data, almost 1.28 million cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in the world, and more than 72 thousand people died.
