Syria says the events in Ukraine were caused by hostile actions of the West against Russia

The real cause of the events taking place in Ukraine is the West's desire to dictate its terms and act in a hostile manner toward Russia, Syrian Arab Republic Foreign Minister and Expatriates Minister Faisal Mekdad said on Thursday.

"What is happening in Ukraine today once again demonstrates the trends of diktat and hostile actions by the West toward the Russian Federation, its security and stability. This is the real reason for the current situation in Ukraine," Mekdad said at a joint meeting of the Syrian and Russian interagency coordination headquarters for the return of Syrian refugees.

He clarified that attempts by Western countries to interfere in the internal affairs of other states and dictate to them how to dispose of their own wealth and their own future violate all norms of international law and the UN Charter.

"Using this at all, I will reaffirm Syria's support for the Russian special military operation and the right of the Russian Federation to defend and protect its national security," Mekdad stressed.

Speaking of his country, he specified that it also faces unfriendly actions by the West, including the return of refugees.

"Unfortunately, the efforts made by the Syrian state and friendly countries, such as the Russian Federation, still face the fact that some states and organizations use this exclusively humanitarian issue to achieve their political goals," the Syrian foreign minister added.
