26 March 2019

Russia can become the main peacemaker in the Middle East due to its commitment to international law.

This was announced in an interview with RIA Novosti by the Minister for Religious Affairs of Syria, Abdusattar Al-Seyid, who arrived in Moscow to participate in the international conference «Ways of achieving inter religious peace: the role of theologians, diplomats and public figures».

«I am sure that Russia will be able to take the leading role of a peacemaker in the Middle East, and the example of this is the important role that Russia played in the settlement of the conflict in Syria», he noted, in particular.

Russia, according to Al-Seyid, unlike other countries, is guided by the norms of international law and in the future can play «an important and serious role in peacemaking» in the entire Middle East.

The United States, as the Syrian minister noted, «on the contrary, sponsored extremism and terrorism, declared that the Golan Heights belonged to Israel, that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel».

«The United States and the EU rely absolutely on their values in the international politics», Al-Seyid stressed out.
