Syrian troops, supported by the Russian Air Force, have eliminated 338 terrorists and destroyed over 80 terrorist sites and hideouts since April 23, preventing terrorist attacks against soldiers and civilians in Syria, a representative of the Russian group of troops in Syria told reporters on Wednesday.

"Units of the Syrian government forces, supported by the Russian Air Force, continue reconnaissance and search operations in the Syrian desert. Since April 23, they have eliminated 338 and detained 44 militants of terrorist groups, captured 20 and disabled six vehicles, destroyed 38 facilities and 45 hideouts," said a representative of the grouping of troops.

According to him, 26 caches, more than 21.5 tons of ammunition, as well as seven tons of material assets and other property of terrorists were discovered. "Thanks to the competent organization of joint reconnaissance and search operations, the terrorist formations suffered significant losses in manpower and equipment and prevented terrorist acts against military personnel and civilians in Syria," the representative of the group of troops said.

He also said that Syrian army engineering units checked 2,530 km of roads and 865 buildings, and cleared three sections of terrain.

Earlier, Rear Admiral Alexander Karpov, deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of the Warring Parties in Syria, said that on the eve of presidential elections in Syria, illegal armed groups were planning terrorist acts and attacks on state institutions in big cities in order to destabilize the situation in the country. The terrorists are trained in militants' training camps in territories outside the control of the Syrian authorities, including El-Tanf zone, controlled by the US Armed Forces. On April 19, the Russian Air Force conducted an airstrike on one of these terrorist training bases near Palmyra. Two hideouts, up to 200 fighters and about 500 kg of ammunition were destroyed.

Presidential elections will be held in Syria on May 26.
