Taliban announced a cease-fire during Eid al-Adha

28 July 2020

The radical Taliban movement has declared a three-day ceasefire in Afghanistan for the Eid al-Adha holiday, the movement said in a statement.

"In order for our compatriots can spend a happy holiday very calmly and cheerfully, all the fighters of the Islamic Emirate are instructed not to conduct any operations against the enemy during the three days and nights of the Eid al-Adha holiday," the Taliban said in a statement (banned in the Russian Federation).

However, the Taliban note that in the event of an attack by the security forces of Afghanistan, the militants can carry out retaliatory actions.

Earlier, the representative of the Taliban office in Qatar Suhail Shaheen said the Taliban are ready to release all remaining Afghan prisoners until the evening of Eid al-Adha and after the celebration to start the intra-Afghan talks if the prisoner exchange is completed. This year's Eid al-Adha sacrifice festival is celebrated by Muslims on July 31.

In late February, at a ceremony in Qatar, the US and the Taliban signed the first peace agreement in more than 18 years of war, which provides for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the beginning of an inter-Afghan dialogue in March after a prisoner exchange deal.
