Taliban celebrate first anniversary of US withdrawal from Afghanistan

31 August 2022

The people of Afghanistan are celebrating the first anniversary of their liberation from US occupation on Wednesday. It is said in a statement by Zabihullah Mujahid, a representative of the Taliban movement that has taken power in Afghanistan (banned in the Russian Federation) and Deputy Minister of Culture and Information in the interim Afghan government formed by the Taliban. The letter was distributed in connection with the state holiday in honor of the anniversary of the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, which is celebrated on August 31 according to the decision of the Taliban.

"Almighty God, the Almighty, has shown special mercy and assistance to our faithful and fighting nation by granting us great freedom, the conquest of Allah Almighty," Mujahid said. - "The faithful people of Afghanistan fought a war against the American invaders, and in the end, faith and piety won, the enemies were forced to flee. A year ago, Afghanistan not only got rid of the American occupation, but also gave an example to the whole world. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan [so the Taliban call their state], as a representative of the legal system of the country and the Afghan people, once again calls on the world community to conduct a reasonable policy towards Afghanistan, to respect the will of Afghans, the independence and territorial integrity of our country, its right to self-determination. We hope for positive interaction with the world."

According to Afghan media reports, a military parade will be held on Wednesday at Bagram Airfield near Kabul to mark the holiday.

The Taliban have launched a massive operation to take control of Afghanistan after the US announced its decision to withdraw its military forces from the country in the spring of 2021. On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul without a fight and President Ashraf Ghani left the republic. On the night of August 31, the US military left Kabul airport, which was the inglorious end of almost 20 years of the US presence in Afghanistan. On September 7, the radicals announced the composition of the provisional government, whose legitimacy has not yet been recognized by any country.
