The Taliban (terrorist organization banned in Russia) view Russia’s legal proceedings to suspend the ban on their movement as a significant step forward in strengthening ties between Afghanistan and Moscow. This was stated by Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in a comment to TASS.
"We believe that any steps in this direction that contribute to stronger relations between Afghanistan and Russia are positive. These measures will help deepen ties between our countries and peoples and are seen as highly valuable," he said.
On March 31, Russia’s Supreme Court press service confirmed that the country’s Prosecutor General had filed a request to suspend the ban on the Taliban’s activities in Russia.
In late December 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law allowing for the suspension of bans on organizations listed as terrorist groups. According to Leonid Slutsky, head of the State Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), this legal change enables Russia to officially engage with Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban government.
