Donald Trump, the next US president, may ease or lift certain sanctions against Russia if the conflict in Ukraine is resolved. A representative of Trump’s transition team shared this possibility in an interview with a TASS correspondent.
Discussing potential changes in Washington's sanctions against Moscow and the normalization of US-Russia trade and economic relations, the representative stated, "This is certainly a possibility if the conflict in Ukraine is resolved."
The source explained that the Trump administration plans to adopt a "carrot-and-stick" approach when engaging with Russia on the Ukrainian crisis. Notably, these measures "will also apply to Ukraine," ensuring that the strategy is "not one-sided or solely focused on Russia."
The representative did not rule out that Trump might pursue direct dialogue with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, "bypassing the US State Department."
Trump’s inauguration is set for January 20, 2025, following his victory in the US presidential election on November 5. The Republican candidate defeated Kamala Harris of the ruling Democratic Party. Trump previously served as US president from 2017 to 2021.
