Tehran and Manama are set to discuss the release of Iranian assets frozen in Bahrain following the severance of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Central Bank of Iran announced.
"Both parties have agreed to hold technical negotiations to ensure the unfreezing of Iranian assets frozen in Bahrain," - the regulator stated, according to the IRNA news agency. - "The talks will commence in Tehran or Manama in the coming days and will continue until results are achieved."
Earlier, Bahrain's news agency reported the initiation of the normalization process between the two countries. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani and Iran's Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani in Tehran on June 23.
In March, Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, stated that there were no obstacles to restoring diplomatic relations between the kingdom and the Islamic Republic.
Bahrain, following Saudi Arabia's lead, severed diplomatic ties with Iran after the Saudi embassy in Tehran was attacked in January 2016. Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to normalize relations and resume embassy operations on March 10, 2023, after which Bahraini authorities expressed their openness to restoring ties with the Islamic Republic.
