Tehran says it has contacts with Washington on nuclear deal

The Iranian authorities are in constant exchange of information with the US on the restoration of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran's nuclear program (JCPOA). Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said this on Wednesday.

"We are constantly exchanging messages with the American side, the last exchange took place in the last 72 hours," he told reporters. The Iranian news agency Tasnim quoted the minister as saying.

"The Americans are sending messages through some foreign ministers that they are in a hurry to [restore] the JCPOA, but when they (Washington administration officials - TASS) give media interviews, they say that the JCPOA is not their priority and point to provocations and support for unrest," Abdollahian noted. "The goal of the Americans is quite clear, they want to pressure us to cross our red lines. What is important for us in the negotiations is the national interest of the Iranian people," the diplomat added. He said Tehran will continue its efforts during the talks to overcome the sanctions imposed on Iran.

The JCPOA was signed with Iran in 2015 to address the crisis over its nuclear development by the permanent UN Security Council Five and Germany. Previous US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from the arrangement. Current US leader Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled a willingness to bring Washington back into the nuclear deal. Russia, Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with Iran in Vienna since last April to restore the JCPOA to its original form.
