Tehran's Ambassador to Moscow: Iran Prepared to Fully Abolish Visas with Russia

16 August 2023

Iran is eager to proceed with the complete abolition of visas with Russia, and the necessary decisions from Iranian officials are anticipated to translate this desire into reality, according to Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

Jalali highlighted that Iran and Russia are in the initial stages of realizing an agreement on visa-free group tourist travel. He emphasized Iran's full readiness for the elimination of visas between the two nations, allowing citizens to travel freely. The ambassador expressed optimism that relevant decisions from officials will lead to the implementation of these measures.

The ambassador extended an invitation for Russians to visit the southern coast of the Persian Gulf during the winter season when the weather is warm. He also pointed out the diverse attractions in Iran, including islands like Kish and Qeshm, ports like Chabahar and Bandar Abbas, and the provinces of Khuzestan and Ahvaz. Jalali also mentioned the central desert regions of Iran, which could provide a unique experience for Russians accustomed to forested areas.

The visa-free group tourist exchange between Russia and Iran is already underway due to an agreement signed on July 1, 2021. Under this agreement, citizens from both countries can visit the other nation without visas for up to 15 days, as long as they are part of a group of up to 50 people. The two countries have planned to fully implement this arrangement by 2023, facilitating easier travel for tourists.
