09 April 2020

The Council of Ulema of the Religious Board of Muslims of Russia adopted the procedure for the burial of those who died from coronavirus.

According to the document published on the website of the organization, their cremation and autopsy are allowed, traditional ablutions and using a shroud for burial are not applied.

"The ablutions of the deceased is required. However, due to the risk of spreading coronavirus infection and infecting other people with it, especially those who participate in ablutions, the Council considers it permissible to bury the body without washing and without performing tayammum, if it becomes impossible to do so," the document says.

Also, the Council of Ulema allowed burial not in a Muslim cemetery, if there is no such possibility.

Also, according to the document, " cremation of the body of the deceased will be considered a forced circumstance and permissible under Sharia law."

At the same time, the funeral prayer should be performed before cremation, if possible, but on condition that the body of the deceased is washed.

"If the washing was not performed, then it is permissible to perform a funeral prayer, and not to perform it," the document says.
