The difference between the situations with the Golan and the Crimea was explained by the United States

10 April 2019

There is nothing in common between the situations with the recognition of the Golan Heights of the territories of Israel and the annexation of the Crimea to Russia. This was announced during the hearings in one of the subcommittees of the Appropriations Committee of the United States by the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

According to him, the difference between them is that Israel «was forced» to seize most of the Golan, since Israel was attacked and there was a risk of invasion of the country’s territory. Russia, according to Pompeo, did not defend from anyone, but «decided to choose a moment to seize territory from a people who did not pose any threat to it».

At the same time, the Secretary of State did not answer the question of whether to understand his words as the fact that the American Authorities allow the seizure of the territory of the country, which Washington considered the aggressor.

Pompeo couldn’t say anything to his logic, could take part of Iraq after the invasion of Saddam Hussein into Kuwait.

Let’s remind, the recognition decree of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan, which the rest of the world, including the UN Security Council, considers part of Syria, the US President Donald Trump signed on March 26th.
