The upper and lower houses of the Parliament of Tajikistan at a joint session set the election of the President of the Republic for October 11, 2020, by Navruz Kurbonzoda, assistant to the Chairman of the upper house of Parliament for relations with the media and non-governmental organizations said.
"Today, at a joint session of both houses of the Parliament, the deputies determined the date of the next presidential election in Tajikistan - October 11, 2020," Kurbonzoda said.
He clarified that the meeting was chaired by the speaker of the upper house of the Parliament, Rustam Emomali. All members of both houses voted unanimously to set this date.
The President of Tajikistan is elected by secret ballot for a term of seven years. The candidate must be a citizen of the Republic who has lived on its territory for the past 10 years, speak the state (Tajik) language, have higher education and be at least 30 years old. To be eligible for election, a candidate must collect at least 5% of the voters' signatures in support. The election is considered completed if more than 50% of the electorate participated in it. To win, a candidate must get more than 50% of the vote.
The previous presidential election was held on November 6, 2013. The current President Emomali Rahmon, who heads the ruling people's democratic party of Tajikistan, received 83.9% (more than 3 million) of the vote with a turnout of more than 86.6%.
