Russia may be excluded from the Council of Europe. About this, according to RIA Novosti, Deputy Director of the Department of European Co-operation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Ilya Subbotin said.
«The sitution is serious, there is a risk of Russia’s withdrawal or exclusion from the Council», the agency quotes the diplomat, in particular.
Let’s remind that in recent years, relations between Russia and the Council of Europe have been going through difficult times. The conflict escalated in 2014, after the deprivation of a number of rights by the Russian parliamentarians because of the position on the Crimea.
The Russian side in response to this ceased participation in the meetings.
In June 2017, Moscow froze part of the payments to the organization’s budget until the authority of the delegation in Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is fully restored.
Let’s remind, the PACE Committee of Ministers may consider the question of excluding a country if it doesn’t pay contributions within two years. For Russia, this period comes at the end of June 2019.
