06 September 2019

On September 5, the International Conference on Countering Illicit Arms Trafficking in the Context of Fighting International Terrorism, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, started in Moscow.

More than 30 countries and international organizations, including the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, as well as experts from government departments and ministries, take part in the conference.

The head of the Spiritual Assembly of Muslims of Russia (SAMR) Albir Krganov made a report on "Spiritual and moral foundations of consolidation of international cooperation in arms control and prevention of terrorism." He noted that "promiscuity in selling weapons, the thirst for profit"  is the factor causing the increase in the illegal flow of weapons. This, in turn, leads to destabilization of the situation in different regions of the world, the eruption of violent conflicts, the victims of which are civilians.

Albir Krganov also noted that the Concept of Russia's foreign policy emphasizes the need to unite the efforts of the international community in the fight against terrorism based on the common spiritual and moral potential of the world's major religions. In this regard, on behalf of Muslim religious figures, the head of the SAMR called on governments to make borders a solid barrier to the illegal transit of weapons, to strengthen cooperation in the fight against international terrorism.

The conference will continue until September 6.
