The Caspian Sea is a sea of opportunities because with proper development of infrastructure it can become a connecting hub for traffic flows. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan said this on Wednesday at the sixth Caspian summit in Ashgabat.

"I think it would not be an exaggeration to call the Caspian Sea  a sea of opportunities as a linking hub for transport and transit flows of Eurasia along the East-West and North-South lines. I am sure that this importance of the Caspian Sea will only increase in the future. Therefore, our countries will have to work seriously on construction and modernization of the port infrastructure, development of sustainable, reliable and efficient logistics schemes to transform the Caspian region into a comfortable, modern and favorable space for international flows of goods and services," he said.

He also noted that the economic sphere is a priority for cooperation in the Caspian region. "The economic sphere is the unconditional priority of cooperation in the Caspian Sea. It is multifaceted and includes transport, logistics, communications, energy, industrial cooperation and many other things," the Turkmen leader stressed.

According to him, the five Caspian littoral states face many challenges, so Ashgabat suggests ordering the foreign ministers to periodically hold meetings on the priority areas of cooperation in all aspects of the five-party agenda.

Ashgabat is hosting the sixth Caspian summit on Wednesday, which is attended by the leaders of Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Azerbaijan.
