The leader of the largest Asian terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah, which is linked to the al-Qaeda organization (outlawed in Russia), was sentenced in Indonesia to seven years in prison. This was reported on Monday by the Straits Times newspaper.

According to the prosecution, 56-year-old Para Vijayanto, who headed the extremist organization since 2009, played a key role in recruiting, training and providing financial support for future fighters who were sent to Syria in 2012-2018 to conduct anti-government activities.

The terrorist leader was arrested in July 2019, 16 years after the search began. The convict himself was not present in the courtroom, the hearing in his case was held via video conference.

As the newspaper notes, Jemaah Islamiyah is responsible for committing the largest terrorist attack in the history of Indonesia. In 2002, militants staged a series of bombings in the popular tourist destination of Kuta, as well as near the building of the US Consulate General in Bali. As a result, 202 people were killed, of which 164 were foreigners, and more than 200 people were injured.
