Soldiers of the Lebanese army found 79 containers of dangerous chemicals in the territory of the seaport of Beirut, the name of which has not yet been disclosed, the army press service reported on Monday.

"A special unit of the engineering forces, together with a group of French experts, during the survey of the port territory from August 14 to 22, first found 25 containers with potentially dangerous chemicals, and then another 54 containers," the report says. It emphasizes that the military "took all necessary precautions, given that the leak of chemicals is a threat to life."

The investigation into the explosion at the seaport of Beirut, which occurred on August 4, is being led by the Lebanese judge Fadi Sawan. He ordered the arrest of 19 officials, including the Director-General of the port of Beirut, Hassan Kreitem, and the head of the customs service, Badri Daher.

Bushra Khalil, a Lebanese lawyer who is a member of the International Bar Union, said that those guilty of criminal negligence that caused the explosion could face the death penalty. "The scale of the consequences of the tragedy is such that the perpetrators can be sentenced to capital punishment," she said.
