The Maldives to open Embassy in Russia

25 July 2019

The Maldives may open its Embassy by 2020, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, who visited Moscow a month ago, told RIA Novosti.

According to him, the government of Maldives issued the decree on the opening of the Embassy in Moscow a few weeks ago. The budget required for opening the diplomatic mission will be submitted to the Parliament in the near future.

"We decided to open an Embassy in Moscow because we believe that Moscow is one of the very important centers of power. We need to continue to contact its government," Shahid said.

The most important task of the Embassy, according to the diplomat, is to improve economic relations between the two countries.

The Republic of Maldives is located in South Asia. The absolute majority of the population are Muslims. There are mosques on each of the inhabited islands.
