Flowers and wreaths in memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War were laid on Wednesday in the cities of Kazakhstan on the occasion of the Day of Sorrow and Remembrance. This was reported by the press service of the Russian House in Nur-Sultan.
"On this day, all regions of Kazakhstan hold a laying of flowers and wreaths ceremony at the memorials of military glory, candles are lit in memory of all those who died in the war," the report said.
In the republic's capital, schoolchildren, students, teachers, representatives of public organizations, members of patriotic clubs, Russian compatriots and Afghan veterans laid flowers at the Eternal Flame at the monument "Otan korgaushylar" ("Defenders of the Fatherland"). On the initiative of the Russian House in Nur-Sultan, a "Candle of Memory" event was also held here.
Commemorative events were also held in Pavlodar, Stepnogorsk, Kokshetau and Semey.
In Kazakhstan, where about 1.2 million people went off to war during the Great Patriotic War, half of whom didn't return home, they remember and honor the feat of their ancestors. Thousands of Kazakhs were awarded medals and orders for their military service; about 500 individuals were named Heroes of the Soviet Union and four of them - twice; 110 more were awarded the three degrees of the Order of Glory.
